Welcome to www.lynbarn.org.uk a site aimed at enthusiasts and supporters of the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway, living in Kent and the South East of England. Designed and maintained by members of the L&B Railway Project's Kent Group, it supports the Trust's official site at www.lynton-rail.co.uk.
The group was formed in March 2002, to support the L&B Trust in it's efforts to restore, reopen and operate what is possibly the most famous narrow gauge railway in Britain. For an idea of the location of the line, please see this extract from a contemporary (1899) map, or for a more up-to-date view, these modern OS maps, overlaid with aerial photographs from the Millenium Map project....
A lot is going on in North Devon, and a small band of local volunteers are working minor miracles, refurbishing the buildings, laying track, repairing and restoring rolling stock, installing signals, and the million-and-one jobs that need to be done in order to keep the line open to passengers, as well as expanding the facilities we are able to offer. Whilst we are too far away in Kent to give as much help on the ground, as we would perhaps like, we can and do still share in the excitement from afar, as well as doing our bit to help, even from this distance!
Why 'Lynbarn'? The Lynbarn railway is running at the Milky Way amusement park in Devon, only a few miles from the L&B, and was set up and operated by members of the L&B Trust, to raise awareness and funds for "the real thing" - exactly the same aims as the North Kent Group. Since L&B trains began running again for passengers in 2004, the Lynbarn operation has been handed over to the owners of the Milky Way, and continues to run for visitors there, releasing the L&B staff to concentrate on the passenger services from Woody Bay.
